Ashwin announced his retirement from international cricket.
India’s ace off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin announced his retirement
from international cricket with immediate effect on the last day of the third Test against Australia in Brisbane.
Known for his innovative bowling and razor-sharp cricketing mind, 38-year-old Ashwin’s
departure in the middle of a Test series against Australia has sparked admiration and debate in equal measure.
Ashwin’s announcement came after the third Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy ended in a draw.
Captain Rohit Sharma confirmed that R Ashwin would not stay with the team
for the remainder of the series and would head back to India on Thursday, December 19.
Off-spinner Ashwin took 537 wickets, only behind Anil Kumble’s 619 scalps,
at an average of 24, from his 106 Tests.
Ashwin ends his career with 537 Test wickets, which makes him the seventh-highest wicket-taker in the format.
Among Indian bowlers, he is second after Anil Kumble’s 619 wickets in Tests.
Meanwhile, Ashwin has taken 765 wickets across formats, which is only bettered by Kumble’s 953.
R Ashwin said he will continue to play domestic cricket and the IPL.
