New Delhi: Voting for all 70 seats of the Delhi Assembly will take place in a single phase today, Wednesday. This election is one of the most high-profile in the country, with a key contest between the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and Congress. The stakes are high for major political figures as well, with leaders like Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, and Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal, along with several state CMs, actively campaigning.
Interestingly, five parties from the INDIA bloc are contesting against each other in this election. AAP and Congress are competing on all 70 seats. Additionally, the Communist Party of India (CPI) has fielded candidates on six seats, while the CPI (Marxist) and CPI (Marxist-Leninist) have two candidates each. The BJP is contesting 68 seats and has allotted two seats to its allies—JD(U) in Burari and LJP (Ram Vilas) in Deoli.
In Maharashtra, BJP’s ally, the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), is contesting 30 seats, and Shiv Sena leader and Maharashtra Deputy CM Eknath Shinde has extended full support to the BJP. Furthermore, the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) is contesting on all 70 seats, and Asaduddin Owaisi’s AIMIM is in the race for 12 seats. The election results will be announced on February 8.
Security Arrangements Tightened
Delhi Police is on high alert for the elections. More than 82,000 security personnel from Delhi Police, paramilitary forces, and ten different states have been deployed to ensure smooth and fair elections. Delhi Police has also kept 19,000 personnel in reserve to be deployed in case of any tension. Additionally, flight routes over Delhi will be altered on the voting day.
1.56 Crore Voters to Cast Their Votes
According to the Delhi Chief Electoral Officer, a total of 1.56 crore voters are eligible to vote in this election, including 83.76 lakh men, 72.36 lakh women, and 1,267 transgender voters. The Election Commission has set up 13,766 polling stations, with 733 specially designed for differently-abled voters. Facilities like Braille ballots and dummy ballot papers will be available for easy voting.
220 Security Companies Deployed
Delhi Special Police Commissioner Devesh Srivastava stated that the Union Home Ministry has provided 220 companies of forces, including 150 companies of paramilitary forces and 70 companies from states like Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, and Rajasthan. These forces have been deployed 48 hours before vote counting. Additionally, home guards from other states will assist in managing queues at counting centers.
Security arrangements include:
- Assistant Police Commissioners (ACP) at polling stations with 9+ booths.
- Inspectors managing stations with 5+ booths.
- 19,000 personnel kept in reserve for immediate action.
AI Chatbox & QR Codes for Security Personnel
A Delhi Police officer mentioned that security personnel can access AI-powered chatboxes and cyber assistants for election-related queries in multiple languages. Additionally, QR codes have been introduced for the general public to access election-related information, such as what can be carried inside the polling booth.
