Indian Navy aircraft carrier ‘Viraat’ to begin last journey today
Viraat, the decommissioned aircraft carrier of the Indian Navy, will begin its last journey today from Mumbai’s Naval Dockyard to Alang in Gujarat, where it will be dismantled. Alang, a beach town, houses the world’s biggest ship breaking yard.
Viraat was India’s second aircraft carrier. The vessel had served the Indian Navy for 30 years before being decommissioned in 2017 in Mumbai. It is the only warship in the Indian fleet which had served in the Royal Navy of the UK and later in the Indian Navy.
Attempts were there to convert ‘Viraat’ into a museum or a restaurant, but none of the plans materialised. The carrier was sold for Rs 38.5 crore and was bought by Shree Ram Green Company . The auction was done by Metal Scrap Trading Coorporation.
The aircraft carrier will be towed by the high capacity tugs owned by Shree Ram Group. The journey will be completed in two days.
