French Open: Defending champ Simona Halep enters 3rd round
Defending champion Simona Halep made it through to the French Open third round. World number three Halep overcame illness to beat Poland’s Magda Linette 6-4 5-7 6-3 in two hours 11 minutes.
World number one Naomi Osaka survived another early scare to reach the third round . Japan’s Osaka, 21, overcame a poor start to beat two-time Grand Slam champion Victoria Azarenka 4-6 7-5 6-3. Osaka is chasing her third successive Grand Slam title having won the 2018 US Open and the Australian Open earlier this year
Serena Williams also breezed into the third round of with a routine 6-3 6-2 win against Japanese Kurumi Nara, wasting no energy in her quest for a record-equalling Grand Slam singles title. The 10th seed, chasing a first major since the 2017 Australian Open, survived a first-set fright in her opening match, but there was no hiccup this time.
World number one Novak Djokovic claimed a routine win over Henri Laaksonen to move into the third round at Roland Garros. Djokovic who won the 2016 competition, secured a 6-1 6-4 6-3 victory on Court Suzanne Lenglen in Paris. He is aiming for his second Grand Slam title of 2019 after winning the Australian Open in January.
