Akshay Kumar starrer ‘ Mission Mangal‘ which picturizes the success story of India’s ambitious Mars mission Mangalyaan took off to a sky-high start as the film recorded a tremendous opening day collection. The Jagan Shakti starrer which features an ensemble star cast of Vidya Balan, Taapsee Pannu, Sonakshi Sinha, Kriti Kulhari, Nitya Menen, Sharman Joshi among others emerged as the clear winner at the box office. The film locked horns with John Abraham starrer ‘Batla House‘.

Mission Mangal‘ has recorded the highest ever opening day collection for Akshay Kumar, beating his previous Independence Day release ‘Gold’ which had recorded Rs 23.63 crore on its first day. Akshay’s ‘Kesari’ which released this year had amassed Rs 20.40 crore on its opening day.

This Independence day saw one of the biggest clashes at the domestic box office, with Akshay Kumar’s ‘Mission Mangal’ locking horns with John Abraham’s ‘Batla House’. While good reviews and critical acclaim favoured the John starrer, it was all the hype around the Akshay starrer that helped record an excellent opening day.

‘Mission Mangal’ delves into the insides of Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) and brings in front the contribution of female scientists and the efforts they put into making India the first country to reach the Mars in its maiden attempt. Helmed by Jagan Shakti, the film hit the screens on August 15.
